A Very Disturbing Story
|
Women and Tzitzis
A woman approached R. Soloveitchik asking him to assist her in her religious devotions, as she wanted to wear Tzitzis. He recommended, in light of the novelty of the action, that it be adopted gradually by initially wearing a Tallis without Tzitzis (a man may not do this) and after an extended trial period, return to discuss the matter further. She returned as agreed, and described to R. Soloveitchik the magnificent nature of her religious experience. The Rav however, used her enthusiasm to dismiss her since her experience had nothing to do with the Mitzvah. Her experience, although real and not to be doubted, was generated by something else but not by her performance of a Mitzvah. http://www.jewishpress.com/indepth/letters-to-the-editor/letters-to-the-editor-289/2014/02/05/2/ |
