The Secret of Continuity
We are "The People Entrusted with Gd’s Message". Throughout our turbulent history it is only our devotion to this sacred trust that has ensured our survival. The triumph of our survival is not perpetuated nor celebrated in magnificent edifices of stone, steel or concrete, these too eventually wear and expire. The endless forces of nature given time, will trample everything that dares stand in their path. The secret of our survival lies in the fact that we have no tangible icons or logos upon which our principles and our devotions rely. Our commitment is to an omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent Gd. In short there is no tangible component to maim, cripple or destroy. Our relationship with Gd is predicated upon knowledge and intellectual stimulation. This is almost our only source of inspiration and identity and it is this that guarantees our Jewish continuity. Wherever we have been sent, however we have been tormented and whenever we have been tested, our loyalty has remained impregnable. We have marched away and been evicted from, places that for hundreds of years, looked and felt like a secure home. We have abandoned or been evicted from the beautiful and inspiring community edifices we constructed and that testified to our adoration for community and for Gd. We have been denuded of our financial wealth but we were never destitute; we could not be dispossessed of our treasures that bind and commit us to Gd. In this context, "Keeping Kosher" is not just about what we do and do not put in our mouth. "Keeping Kosher" is a declaration of allegiance. It is about love, dedication and loyalty. "Keeping Kosher" is an expression of our love, our dedication and our realisation that we live a loyal life. A Remarkable Blend Within Our Tradition Kosher VeYosher represents a remarkable blend that seeks refreshing perspectives from within our traditions. Torah, G-d’s Word and instruction, is not just about submission but about investigation. As the diamond sparkles from many perspectives and reveals many beautiful colours, so too every page of our Talmud is replete with debate and analysis. Every day of our life is an opportunity to see these different and beautiful perspectives. We wish to inform, educate and display the many beautiful facets of Judaism and thereby inspire and engage. |
